Meet Mattias Steljic! 👋
One of our passionate youth patrolling members, dedicated to ensuring the safety of beachgoers and contributing to our community.

How long have you been a member of Mermaid Beach Surf Life Saving Club? 
- I have been a member of Mermaid Beach Surf Life Saving Club for around a year, since I got my Bronze Medallion at the end of last season.
What inspired you to join Mermaid Beach Surf Life Saving Club? 
- I decided to join Mermaid Beach Surf Life Saving Club through its partnership with my school, Queensland Academy of Health Sciences. Because of this program and the club’s welcoming and inviting environment, I chose to do Surf Life Saving.
What’s your favourite memory or experience at the club? 
- My favourite memory at Mermaid has to be when we got to help out with the Bush to Beach Initiative, where I got to welcome inland Indigenous communities to the beach and just have so much fun with everyone.
If you could give one beach safety tip to the public, what would it be? 
- Honestly, when it comes to beach safety, the best tip would be to always be aware. Being aware of your surroundings, by making sure you stay between the red and yellow flags. Being aware of others, making sure to keep an eye out for anyone in trouble. Most importantly, being aware of yourself, putting on sunscreen and making sure you’re staying within your abilities at the beach.
What do you love most about being part of the Mermaid Beach SLSC community? 
- What I love the most is the community that I have been able to form at Mermaid Beach. Making friends on my patrol, talking to new people at different programs, and having the opportunity to meet so many different people I would otherwise are what make my time at Mermaid so fun.
