Newly crowned, Australian Surf Life Saving “Club of the Year” 2022, Mermaid Beach AEME Surf Life Saving Club is a friendly, family-oriented club with established programs in surf sports, youth development and nippers. New members and visitors always welcome.
Boasting some of the Gold Coast’s best surf club facilities, locals and visitors alike love our spectacular location, quality food and friendly, attentive service. Now that was a season launch! 🚀👏🏼👏🏼
A sea of pink rashies and red, white and blue caps on the grass, a few words from our guest speakers and sponsors @angiebell.mp @kollosche_ and coaches, then down onto the sand for the first Nippers session of 2026/27.
Nippers is kids learning real surf skills — spotting rips, body surfing, board work and building confidence in the ocean.
To the families who had their very first Nippers experience today, welcome to the family! And to our U14s, who spent the first day of the season completing Day 1 of their SRC course — an important milestone as they make the transition from Nippers to the lifesavers who patrol this beach.
Thank you to everyone who came down, every volunteer who jumped in to help set up, those who supported our Age Managers with activities on the beach, and everyone who grabbed a sausage from the @vonbibraautogroup Nippers BBQ. It all goes straight back into supporting our Nipper program.
We’ll see you back on the sand next Sunday at 8.15am.

The Season Launch and the first day of Nippers is this Sunday!
Arrive by 8.15am to sign in, for an 8.30am start. We’ll kick off on the grass with an introduction to the season from a few guest speakers, age managers and club members, then head down onto the sand for some fun.
It’s a whole-club duty day, so we’re asking as many families as possible to jump in and help. New this season? Don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of people to show you the ropes. To pick a role, open the Club Calendar tab, tap Season Launch, then Duty Roster. Don’t be shy 😉
The BBQ will be going all morning. Grab a burger, a sausage sizzle or a cold drink and support our club and our Nipper program.

Since 1945.
When the Pacific war ended in August 1945, thousands of soldiers faced months of waiting to be demobilised. At the Watercraft Workshops in Bulimba, Craftsman Tom Sneyd — a pre-war lifesaver from Stanwell Park — rallied his mates into swimming and lifesaving instead of waiting around.
They drove down from Brisbane in army vehicles, slept in tents, ate from the mess, and built the first clubhouse on the Ocean Street beachfront out of scrounged material. The first Bronze Medallion squad qualified on Christmas Day, 1945.
The beach wasn’t even called Mermaid Beach yet. It was Los Angeles Beach until 11 September 1946 — so the club is older than the name of the beach it patrols. We kept AEME in our name as a reminder of who started us.
Eighty years on, we’re still here. Volunteer patrols every weekend of the season, a Nippers program full of kids who’ll grow up knowing this beach, and a club that’s been named Australian Surf Life Saving Club of the Year and Queensland Club of the Year.
Same beach. Same job. Better clubhouse.
