Mermaid Beach SLSC Supporters Club

The supporters club is starting to look like a Surf Club with a 1960’s vintage surf ski being placed on display over the northern deck.  Note the St Christopher Medal embedded into the front deck of the ski (patron saint of travelers) and no doubt affording the paddler some comfort in open ocean paddling.  Mick Fitzgerald, son Sean assisted other nipper parents in the install.

The Ski is on loan from a local resident who is supportive of the Life Saving effort.  Keep watching for further developments.

Handicap Surf Race Report 14th February 2010

Still at this stage in the season, we are attracting 40 competitors to the race and the camaraderie is as strong as ever. Race organizers set the course as a two lapper that was always going to test the swimmers – out across the bank and then into dead water on return to shore.

The complaints were tiresome.

Welcome back Mitch with one of the best wins of the season to swim through the pack off 7 minutes 45 seconds. Chris Waters impressed off 9 minutes with second place and Sam Goodwin also off 7 minutes and 45 seconds for 3rd.

After reviewing Mitch’s proficiency status he maintains the outright win – great swimming. It was impossible to separate Sandy Penman and Wayne Simmons after a sprint up the beach. Sean Fitzgerald takes back the lead in the competition for the season with a fine performance in coming in 9th (Gunner was ecstatic in placing above Sean – a feud that has thus far lasted the season)
This week’s result (preliminary - scroll down for the leaders board)

Holland Park Surf Safe Appeal - an outstanding success - Tuesday, 1 December 2009
The Holland Park local community showed outstanding support for the Mermaid Beach SLSC Surf Safe appeal. The club raised in excess of $4000 over the collection weekend through door knocking in the local area and at the main collection site that was set up at the local Dan Murphy’s outlet at the Holland Park hotel. Mermaid Beach Club President Ron Plass said that the support shown by Dan Murphy’s in allowing the club to set up a collection site at their outlet was instrumental in the club exceeding its collection goal, and was greatly appreciated.

The display at Dan Murphy’s over the weekend included an operational Inflatable Rescue Boat and other key items of life saving equipment and created great interest to local patrons and also generated a number of membership enquiries.

“We are deeply indebted to the management of the Dan Murphy’s organisation who allowed us to collect at their store and their local management and staff who were wonderful hosts over the weekend ” Ron Plass…
